(1) To promote engagement with the Buddhist tradition and contribute to the public good through regular lecture series, publications, conferences, and research programmes.

(2) To support a Visiting Professor of Buddhist studies who will deliver public lectures and a series of seminars and/or workshops in his/her area of research for CUHK students.

(3) To administrate a taught MA programme on Buddhist Studies through the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies under the Faculty of Arts.

(4) To coordinate the supervision of MPhil and PhD students in Buddhist Studies.

(5) To conduct research on Buddhism in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies.

(6) To coordinate a Certificate and Diploma programme on Buddhist Studies of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies.

《Workshop on Vinaya-saṃgraha in Chinese and Tibetan》

The CUHK Centre of Buddhist Studies is pleased to invite you to participate in a five-day reading workshop, “Workshop on Vinaya-saṃgraha in Chinese and Tibetan”, to be held from August 31–September 4, 2026. The workshop welcomes graduate students from relevant fields from CUHK and other universities for collaborative study and discussion.

Workshop Highlights:

The primary reading material for our workshop is one of the major handbooks of the Mūlasarvāstivāda-vinaya, the Vinaya-saṃgraha (Chi. 律攝, Tib. འདུལ་བ་བསྡུས་པ), which is attributed to the medieval Indian monk *Viśeṣamitra (Chi. 勝友; Tib. ཁྱད་པར་བཤེས་གཉེན, no later than the seventh century CE). This text is unfortunately not preserved in Indian manuscripts but is fully preserved in two translations in Chinese and Tibetan. The Chinese translation is made by Yijing 義浄 (635–713), who studied at Nālandā. This indicates that the Vinaya-saṃgraha was regarded as an important text, at least at Nālandā in India, and was transmitted into both Chinese and Tibetan cultural spheres, exerting a broad influence on later Buddhist traditions in Asia. The Vinaya-saṃgraha has not, however, received sufficient scholarly attention; there are only a handful of modern studies in which it has been discussed in any detail. These discussions are, moreover, limited to small portions of the text and mostly focus on Yijing’s translation, often disregarding the Tibetan translation. In our workshop, we will read one section of the Vinaya-saṃgraha on ordination by comparing Yijing’s translation with the Tibetan translation in order to explore the distinctive features of the text.
